Non-surgical treatment

Observation, exercise and sport

For small curves, regular monitoring and scoliosis-specific exercises are the first option. Sport is allowed and encouraged.

What does observation mean?

If the curve is small (usually under 20–25 degrees), the first approach is monitoring with examinations and X-rays at regular intervals. The aim is to start treatment without delay if the curve progresses.

Scoliosis-specific exercises

Scoliosis-specific physiotherapy methods such as Schroth and SEAS aim to improve postural awareness, breathing and trunk control. They may be recommended for mild curves and alongside brace treatment. These exercises should be learnt from a physiotherapist trained in the method and practised regularly at home.

Exercises alone do not correct large curves, and they are no substitute for a brace or other treatment when a curve is progressing.

Sport and daily life

  • Children with scoliosis can take part in PE lessons and school sport.
  • Swimming, running, dance and team sports are all fine; regular physical activity is good for muscle strength and general health.
  • Backpacks and sitting posture do not make a curve worse, although carrying a bag on both shoulders with an even load is still sensible.

Check-ups

During observation, check-ups are usually every 4–6 months. At each visit, your doctor decides whether the curve has increased, what stage of growth has been reached and whether treatment needs to change.

This article is for general information and does not replace an examination. Diagnosis and treatment decisions are made individually, based on examination and test results.
