Was the scoliosis caused by a heavy bag or poor posture?

No. Although the cause of idiopathic scoliosis is unknown, bags, sitting posture, sleeping position and sport do not cause scoliosis.

Will the curve correct itself?

In adolescent scoliosis the curve does not usually correct itself. Some small curves that start in infancy can resolve on their own, which is why monitoring matters.

Can my child play sport?

Yes. Sport is recommended for children with scoliosis. During brace treatment, the brace can usually be taken off for sport. After surgery, your surgeon will decide when sport can be resumed.

Will a brace straighten the curve?

The main aim of a brace is to stop the curve from progressing during growth. Once the brace is stopped, the curve usually stays close to its size before bracing.

Will the curve progress after growth has finished?

Once growth is complete, curves under 30 degrees usually do not progress. Curves over 50 degrees may progress by about 1 degree a year in adulthood.

Does scoliosis affect pregnancy?

Most women who have scoliosis, or who have had scoliosis surgery, have uncomplicated pregnancies and births. If the fusion extends into the lower back, an epidural or spinal anaesthetic can be more difficult, so the delivery team should be told in advance.

Will I be taller after surgery?

Correcting the curve can add some height. The fused section does not grow, but in patients operated on in adolescence the remaining growth is usually limited.

Will the screws and rods be removed?

Usually not. Implants are left in place permanently unless they cause problems. They rarely set off airport security alarms. Titanium and cobalt-chrome implants do not usually prevent MRI scans.

What happens if I miss a check-up?

During growth, a curve can progress quickly over a few months. A missed check-up can mean missing the time when treatment works best. If you have missed an appointment, book a new one as soon as possible.
